You're in the same boat as me. On a normally running car with perfect cats I'd say NO do NOT gut them. It's not worth the low end losses. Even though I LONG for that awesome sound everyday, I'm glad I put cats back on. Now...if indeed your cats are bad (the smell is a dead giveaway) you have options. For a very small price, you can get them gutted and "see how you like it" since you're going to need new cats or hi flows anyway. However, what I suspect might happen is that if you are losing power right now with the cats as the cause, when you gut them your brain will think that the newly gutted cats are awesome and giving you lots of power. When in reality, you can't compare clogged to gutted properly. You need to compare properly working to gutted. So it's a difficult game to play. But if you must know, gut this set (if they are going bad) and try it out. If you love it and want to do it PROPERLY and get every last bit of power out of it, get the hi-flows which will give you proper turbulence (or lack thereof) for low end torque saving, and a great sound and flow at the top end. Whew, make sense? :)
